Symptoms:
  • Sudden pain that begins on the right side of the lower belly.
  • Sudden pain that begins around the belly button and often shifts to the lower right belly.
  • Pain that worsens with coughing, walking, or making other jarring movements.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Loss of appetite.

    • Procedure:

    Open Appendectomy:

  • Incision: Several small incisions (1/2 to 1 inch) are made near the belly button.
  • Exploration: The abdominal cavity is opened to locate the appendix.
  • Separation: The appendix is detached from the colon.
  • Removal: The appendix is removed through the incision.

    • Laparoscopic Appendectomy:

  • Incision: A 2-4 inch incision is made in the lower right abdomen.
  • Inflation: Carbon dioxide gas is used to inflate the abdomen, providing space for the procedure.
  • Laparoscope Insertion: A laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera) is inserted through one incision
  • Instrument Insertion: Surgical instruments are inserted through other incisions.
  • Separation & Removal: The appendix is detached and removed through one of the small incisions.
  • Wound Closure: The incisions are closed with stitches or staples and covered with a bandage.

    Recovery after an appendectomy typically takes 1 to 2 weeks for laparoscopic surgery and 4 to 6 weeks for open surgery. The specific timeline can vary based on factors like the severity of appendicitis, any complications, and individual healing abilities.
