Knee Arthroscopy

Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat various knee problems. It involves making small incisions to insert a camera (arthroscope) and small surgical instruments into the knee joint.

What is knee Arthroscopy?

Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat various knee problems. It involves making small incisions to insert a camera (arthroscope) and small surgical instruments into the knee joint. This allows doctors to view the inside of the knee, identify the cause of pain or injury, and perform repairs or treatments.

Types of Knee arthroscopy:

Meniscus Repair/Partial Meniscectomy: This involves repairing a torn meniscus (the C-shaped cartilage in the knee) or removing only the damaged portion of the meniscus.

ACL Reconstruction: This procedure reconstructs the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) using a graft, often with the help of arthroscopy.

Removal of Loose Bodies: This involves removing loose cartilage or bone fragments that can cause pain or locking in the knee.

Synovectomy: This procedure removes inflamed synovial tissue lining the knee joint.

Chondral Defect Repair: This includes procedures like microfracture to repair damaged cartilage.

Symptoms:
  • Knee pain and inflammation.
  • Knee instability.
  • Sounds when walking or running.
  • Weakness or decreased range of motion.
  • Swelling.

  • Procedure:

    1. Anesthesia: The patient receives either general anesthesia (put to sleep) or regional anesthesia (numbing the lower body).
    2. Incision: Small incisions (usually 1/2 inch or less) are made around the knee.
    3. Arthroscopy: A thin tube with a camera (arthroscope) and a light source is inserted into the knee joint through one of the incisions.
    4. Visualization: The camera displays images of the inside of the knee on a monitor, allowing the surgeon to visualize the joint structures.
    5. Repair or Treatment: If necessary, small surgical instruments are inserted through additional incisions to repair damaged tissues, remove loose fragments, or perform other procedures.
    6. Closure: The incisions are closed with sutures or staples.

    Recovery:

Recovery after knee arthroscopy typically takes several weeks, with full recovery often achievable within 6-8 weeks for most patients. However, the specific timeline depends on the nature of the knee issue and any repairs made during the surgery. Following the procedure, patients will gradually regain movement and strength through physical therapy.
