Fracture repair

Fracture repair, also known as bone fracture repair, involves stabilizing and aligning broken bones to promote healing. This can be achieved through various methods, including casting, internal fixation (using screws, plates, or rods), external fixation, or a combination of these techniques.

What is Fracture repair

Fracture repair, also known as bone fracture repair, involves stabilizing and aligning broken bones to promote healing. This can be achieved through various methods, including casting, internal fixation (using screws, plates, or rods), external fixation, or a combination of these techniques. The goal is to ensure the bones heal properly, minimizing pain and preventing complications.

Types of Fracture repair:

Internal Fixation: This method involves a surgical procedure where the fractured bone fragments are realigned, and then metal implants (such as plates, screws, rods, or nails) are inserted inside the bone to hold them in place. The implants are usually made of stainless steel or titanium. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is a common surgical technique used for fractures.

External Fixation: This technique uses a device that is attached to the outside of the body, with pins or screws inserted into the bone fragments. A frame is then attached to the pins, helping to maintain the bone's alignment and stability while it heals. This method is often used for complex fractures or when internal fixation is not feasible.

Symptoms:
  • Decreased Pain
  • Increased Range of Motion
  • Reduced Swelling and Bruising
  • Improved Mobility

  • Procedure:

    1. Immobilization with a Cast or Splint:
Closed Reduction: If the fracture is not complex, the doctor may realign the bone fragments by hand (closed reduction) and then immobilize it with a cast or splint.
Immobilization: The cast or splint helps keep the bone fragments in place and protects them while they heal.

    2. Surgery (ORIF):
Open Reduction: This involves making an incision to expose the fracture site and then realigning the bone fragments.
Internal Fixation: The surgeon then uses metal implants like plates, screws, or rods to secure the bone fragments in place, ensuring proper healing.
Closure: Once the bone is fixed, the incision is closed, and the leg is immobilized.

    3. External Fixation:
Pins and Frame: In this procedure, pins are inserted into the bone above and below the fracture site and connected to a metal frame outside the body.
Stabilization: The frame helps stabilize the bone and maintain its alignment while it heals.

    Recovery:

Fracture recovery typically takes 6-8 weeks, but can vary widely depending on the specific bone, severity of the fracture, individual factors, and treatment methods. The healing process involves several phases, including inflammation, soft callus formation, hard callus formation, and remodeling. Following a doctor's instructions, including rest, immobilization, and a healthy diet, can help facilitate faster recovery.
