Rotator Cuff Repair

Rotator cuff repair surgery is a procedure to fix a torn tendon in the shoulder, reattaching it to the bone. This can be done using either arthroscopic or open techniques.

What is Rotator cuff repair

Rotator cuff repair surgery is a procedure to fix a torn tendon in the shoulder, reattaching it to the bone. This can be done using either arthroscopic or open techniques. The goal is to restore shoulder function, reduce pain, and improve range of motion.

Types of Rotator cuff repair:

Open Repair:
This technique involves making a larger incision to directly expose the torn tendon and the bone where it's supposed to be attached. The surgeon then stitches the tendon back to its original spot using sutures or other anchors.

Arthroscopic Repair:
In this minimally invasive approach, the surgeon makes small incisions to insert an arthroscope (a small camera) and specialized instruments. The arthroscope allows the surgeon to visualize the inside of the shoulder joint and repair the tear, often by reattaching the tendon to the bone with suture anchors.

Mini-Open Repair:
This technique combines aspects of both open and arthroscopic procedures. It involves a smaller incision than open repair, and the surgeon may use a combination of open and arthroscopic techniques to access and repair the torn tendon.

Symptoms:
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Weakness
  • Reduced Range of Motion
  • Night Pain
  • Cracking or Popping Sensation

  • Procedure:

    Rotator Cuff Repair Procedure:

Anesthesia: You are given anesthesia (usually general) to ensure you are comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.

Incision(s): The surgeon makes one or more incisions based on the chosen surgical technique (arthroscopy, open repair, or mini-open repair).

Visualization (if arthroscopic): If it's an arthroscopic procedure, a small camera (arthroscope) is inserted to view the inside of the shoulder joint on a monitor.

Tendon Mobilization: The torn rotator cuff tendon is identified and carefully mobilized to prepare it for reattachment.

Bone Preparation: The area on the humerus bone (upper arm bone) where the tendon will be reattached is prepared, often by roughening the surface to promote healing.

Tendon Reattachment: The torn tendon is reattached to the bone using sutures and suture anchors. These anchors are inserted into the bone, and the sutures are used to secure the tendon.

Tissue Management: Any bone spurs, inflamed bursa, or other damaged tissue are removed as needed.

Closure: The incisions are closed with stitches or surgical staples.

    Recovery:

Recovery after rotator cuff repair typically involves a phased approach to rehabilitation, starting with immobilization and passive movement, progressing to active range of motion, and then strengthening exercises. Full recovery and return to pre-injury function can take several months, with most people regaining strength and mobility within 4-6 months, but full recovery may take up to 12-18 months.
